MARK WILLIAMS R.I.P.

Penzance AFC is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Mark Williams. Mark had two spells with the Magpies, for whom his father Russell also played, and was godfather to current Head Coach Matt James.

Mark represented Penzance in the late eighties and nineties. He was regarded (as was Russell) as one of the fastest wingers in Cornish football. His early footballing years began with appearances in the Cornwall schools and Youth teams culminating in a famous evening at Bodmin Town turning out against an England Youth eleven. He went on to play senior football for Helston, Mullion, Falmouth Town and finally, following in his Dad’s footsteps, Penzance where he enjoyed many happy years. He was a member of the team that famously took on Liverpool at Penlee Park in August 1988.

“I was shocked to hear the sad news that Mark had passed away,” says John Mead. “Like his father Russell, his death came at a relatively early age. Mark was a super-fast sprinter - a quality he used to full advantage during his two spells at Penzance. Whether on the wing or down the middle, he could out-pace any defender he came up against!

“He was a quiet person on and off the field - except when he was blowing in the Helston Town Band. He always wore the Penzance shirt with pride, as did his father. Rest in Peace Mark.”

A tribute to Mark will be staged before Saturday’s Cup tie against Torridgeside.
