NEWLYN NON-ATHLETICO 1, PENZANCE RESERVES 3

ree

It was derby day delight for Penzance Reserves, a 3-1 win away to Newlyn Non-Athletico seeing them move up to second place in the league table despite travelling with a squad of just thirteen players writes Henry Ramsey.

Luke Carroll saw an early volley get palmed away as Penzance applied pressure, but they were hit on a counter attack, a cross-field ball being tapped in at the back post to give the home side a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

This didn’t deter Penzance as Newlyn changed their shape in an effort to protect the lead. The Magpies were forced into making a substitution in the 35th minute as Connor Glanville picked up a knock. This saw Sid Wilson come on and Elliot Carveth move out to the wing-back role. It took just ten minutes for Wilson to make an impact, switching the play to Kizzy Snowden who danced past Newlyn players to smartly slide Carveth in down the left. The latter flashed an inviting ball into the box, which was controlled and smashed into the bottom right hand corner by Charlie Palmer in the 44th minute - his first goal since returning to Penzance.

The second half couldn’t have started much better for Penzance as, in just the 46th minute, Wilson managed to slip a shot just under the keeper to put the visitors ahead. The pressure built for the rest of the half, with Carroll being unlucky having a left footed effort palmed away. The Magpies kept battling, with Lewis Hitchens putting in a remarkable last ditch challenge in his own eighteen yard box to dispossess the goal-bound Newlyn striker.

It was the 80th minute that saw the game killed off, by none other than Carroll. A fantastic drop kick from Harvey Parsons saw the ball travel across the whole Newlyn side, and put the striker in one-on-one. Carroll coolly slotted home to score in his fourth consecutive game and secure the points.

“It was an unmatched efforts from the lads,” said Head Coach Henry Ramsay. “The players that were out there today have battled tremendously and achieved a statement win. They have worked for each other and the results show that. We are riding a really good high at the moment. It’s important now that we continue working and raising our standards, and we keep challenging to the very end of the season. There is still so much to play for this year!”
