PENZANCE 3, CAMELFORD 1

Penzance moved up to sixth place in the table by virtue of a hard-earned win over Camelford at Penlee Park. For most of the match it looked like an early Silas Sullivan effort would have to suffice in a subdued encounter. However, a late flurry of goals, including a wonder strike by Darryl Richards, sent the crowd home buzzing.

Even dropping into the back-line to deputise for injured left-back James Butler could not keep Sullivan off the score-sheet. Penzance’s Mr Versatile punished a slip in the opening moments to walk the ball into an empty net – his fourth goal of the fledgling season. Bundling the rebound of a saved Lewis Caspall shot over the line, Charlie Young was denied a first Magpies goal by an offside flag as the home side looked to kick on. However, a Tyler Tonkin free-kick that was saved by Josh Colwill was their only other chance of note as the first half petered out.

With Kenan Nicholas particularly impressive down the right, Camelford came more into the match after the break. Nicholas himself, and veteran striker Mark Gusterson, both went close, but the away side’s chances of levelling were dramatically reduced when Kenley Dyson was dismissed for a second bookable offence - a foul on Charlie Willis. With Gusterson sin-binned in the same incident, Camelford were reduced to nine men and Willis capitalised, running on to a superb Adam Lewis through ball to make it 2-0 with five minutes to go.

Gusterson returned to the fray and immediately reduced the deficit, but Camelford’s renewed hope was quickly extinguished by a sublime goal from Richards. Cutting in from the right the  half-time substitute for Player Manager Mark Vercesi curled the ball into Colwill’s far top corner to the seal the deal.

“It was not the best from us today, but three points are three points and that was our target, and what a goal at the end by Darryl,” said Vercesi. “Now we prepare for an extremely tough test away to Dobwalls next.”
