PENZANCE RESERVES 1, PENDEEN ROVERS RESERVES 2

A strong Pendeen side, containing a number of first team regulars, scored two late goals to turn around an exciting friendly in front of a large crowd at Penlee Park writes James Wright.

A young Penzance side turned in an impressive performance, especially throughout a first half that they bossed. The first of numerous good chances came after ten minutes when Charlie Palmer released Jahmali Prowse’s down the left. The latter delivered a fine cross to Adam Lewis at the far post, but the midfielder was unable to get his volley on target. On the half hour Ashley Mead located Luke Carroll with a glorious long cross-field pass, but the new signing’s shot was well saved. The Magpies got the goal their performance richly deserved on the stroke of half-time when Logan Trevains curled home a sumptuous free-kick from over 25 yards out.

Wonder strike! Logan Trevains fires the Magpies into a half-time lead.

The ex-Mousehole midfielder was denied a second by a fine save shortly after the break. Prowse also went close to extending the lead as the Magpies continued to impress, but Pendeen got stronger as the contest wore on. Kam Collins, who was forced to take over in goal by an injury to Will Trenoweth, saved well from Brad Andiego but was left flat-footed by a looping Joe Davies header ten minutes from time. Right at the death, Steve Abbott-Smith turned home the ball from close range following a neat move down the right to nick it for Rovers.

Nonetheless, the Penzance management were happy.“We are over the moon with the boys’ performance this evening,” enthused coach Henry Ramsay. “Facing a much stronger Pendeen side than expected, the boys were well up for it and adapted straight away. That was by far the best group performance that we have put together so far as a squad, with a few big names still missing. We dug in deep and fought well against a top four side in the division above. There were really promising signs - hopefully all leading to a successful season.”
