PROBUS 1, PENZANCE RESERVES 4

Debuts from Oakley Clary-Brom and Asa Donaldson, signed from St Ives Town, helped the Magpies complete a league double over Probus with a dominant display writes Henry Ramsay.

They made a strong start, enjoying the lion’s share of the ball and looking comfortable in possession, and were aided by the home side’s Tom Rhodes copping a red card after just 15 minutes for an attempted headbutt on Luke Carroll. The deadlock was broken just before the break as Carroll capitalised on Oakley’s ball through and exquisitely chipped the keeper from a wide angle.

Ollie Page was substituted at half time as a precaution, as he was on a yellow card, seeing Lewis Hitchens replace him in the back line. Penzance again continued to enjoy the ball, and changed to a more attacking shape, seeing Bernardo Braga join the front two leaving the Magpies with two central midfielders. This quicky had an effect as Braga won a penalty, coolly converted by Kizzy Snowden, in the 57th minute.

Probus continued battling away, and managed to win a 70th minute penalty that was tucked away by Ben Daniell. However, this did not deter the Magpies. Ben Strevens replaced Braga, for his debut, and battled superbly carrying the visitors forward as a unit. Carroll secured his second – and 20th of the season in all competitions - with a fine finish into the bottom right-hand corner in the 82nd minute, before making way for returning Uni student Connor Thomas. The scoring wasn’t complete, however, as captain Ryan Wilkinson timed a run to head home a superb Elliot Carveth free-kick in injury-time.  The win lifts the Magpies up to joint second with Camborne School of Mines who lost to league leaders Dropship.

"I’m really pleased with today's result,” enthused manager Daz Smith. “It's a tough place to come to and get anything . I felt we battled really well, we were hard to break down, and we are now scoring a variety of goals which is very pleasing. Oakley and Asa both hit the ground running and were superb, whilst 16 year old Ben came on and again affected the game positively. A job done today".
