CALLINGTON TOWN 2, PENZANCE 0

Playing their first game on the road since mid-November, Penzance were unable to convert a monopoly of possession into clear chances and therefore slipped to just their second away defeat of the season.

The Magpies welcomed back striker Charlie Young from illness and midfielder Kam Collins after suspension, and made a very positive start. It was therefore against the run of play that Callington took the lead in the 16th minute, Kieran Ryall rising highest at the far post to nod home a deep cross from the right.

An excellent ball by Collins located Silas Sullivan, but no Penzance player was in the middle to turn home the latter's cut back. The first half concluded with Collins seeing a drive from the edge of the penalty area deflected just wide.

Penzance continued to enjoy territorial advantage after the turnaround. Sullivan had a shot charged down, Jacob Trudgeon was off target with a speculative effort, then Charlie Young had a free-kick blocked by a sound defensive well. Next, Ben Palmer and Charlie Young linked up to create a good opening for Ewan Trevains, but Jake Crebin hared off his line to bravely deny the teenage substitute.

And that proved to be Penzance's final chance. With seven minutes remaining, Connor Pritchard latched on to a half-cleared ball and smashed home a shot from the edge of the area to double Cally's lead. Only a fine save by Mikey Flores from Fin Skews moments afterwards prevented the margin from widening further.

“At half-time I thought them being 1-0 up on us was perhaps a little unjust,” reflected Penzance manager Mark Vercesi”. We had the majority of the ball in their half and created a few chances, yet they scored with their only chance. So the first half was probably quite even, but in the second half I just don’t think we had enough ideas and they got a breakaway goal. It was another disappointing one.”
