Penzance picked up a first point away from home of the new season, but will feel they may have missed out on a better return after conceding a late equaliser.
On the typically immaculate Trefew surface, the visitors were first to threaten, Rolandos Samnauskas cutting in from the left before unleashing a stinging drive that was tipped over by Josh Colwill. The Camels responded with the lively Shae Cardiff making a purposeful burst down the right and testing Mikey Flores. The Penzance keeper was then beaten by a Brooklyn Wilkins shot but rescued by his left-hand upright with the ball bouncing to safety.
The Magpies finished the half back on top. Samnauskas picked out Charlie Willis with a raking cross-field pass, but the youngster was unable to make a clean connection. After the turnaround, Oscar Massey was denied by Colwill before his side made a 53rd minute break-through. The Camelford defence failed to deal with a Kevin Lawrence corner from the right, and Mark Vercesi ripped a shot high into the roof of the net.
Michael Fitchett spurned a glorious opportunity to make the game safe eight minutes from time. Set up by Samnauskas, the substitute fired over with the goal at his mercy, and the miss proved costly. Sam Wade picked out Charlie Hambly with a fine long pass, and the home captain expertly controlled the ball before lashing it home to secure his side a point.
“I think a draw probably is a fair reflection, but on the other hand, we are disappointed”, said Penzance manager Ashley Waters. “The fact that we have come away to Camelford where we lost 6-1 last season and we’ve got a point, and we are disappointed, tells us a lot about the direction we are going in.”
