Penzance shrugged off a number of notable absences to record a workmanlike win at Dobwalls and move up to fourth in the table writes James Wright.
After one hundred consecutive League starts, Archie Reynolds was unavailable. With fellow defenders Josh Turner and player-manager Mark Vercesi side-lined through injury, the Magpies reverted to a flat back four with teenage centre-back Rohan Bennetts making his second full appearance, alongside Silas Sullivan in the middle. James Butler was also awarded a second campaign start, at left-back with Ewan Trevains dropping from midfield to right-back.
Despite the jiggling, Penzance were fast out of the traps taking a ninth minute lead. Trevains put Josh Magin clear down the right and the latter’s pinpoint centre was gleefully snaffled up by Lewis Caspall for his fifth goal in two games, and seventh of the season.By the 22nd minute, Dobwalls had a mountain to climb. Charlie Willis lofted over a testing cross from wide on the left that keeper Matt Westall could only claw out into the path of striker Charlie Young who made no mistake. Magin was just off target from a similar delivery from Sullivan, then Bennetts had a header from a James Butler free-kick repelled as Penzance threatened to extend the margin further.
The home side carried a far greater attacking threat after the turnaround. Francis Pengelly had a shot blocked, then Harry Salmon pulled off a fine tip-over to deny Alex Oshinyemi. An injury to Bennetts forced the visitors to reshuffle again. Young dropped back into central defence with Wade Brown coming on up top. And, just four minutes after leaving the bench, the veteran striker received a pass from Magin and skilfully turned and tucked the ball home to secure the victory.
“I am really happy with that considering we were missing several players,” reflected Vercesi. “The boys who came in really played well and that shows our strength in depth - lots of good headaches going forward now from this highly competitive squad.”
