Returnees Liam Andrew and Kai Baxter both made first appearances since rejoining the Magpies as their new team gleaned a hard-earned point from a tight tussle at Enys Park.
Baxter, who has had spells with Holsworthy, Mousehole and Helston since leaving Penlee Park in 2023, played in a wide left attacking role, whilst the experienced Andrew, who started last season with Wendron before taking a break from the game, partnered captain Ryan Wilkinson in central defence. And their side made an early break-through when an Elliott Carveth free-kick was flicked on to Luke Carroll who rammed home his third goal of the season.
A slick move down the right presented Lucian Easter with a great chance to double the lead, but the youngster pushed his shot inches wide of Lucas Lang’s left hand post. This enabled St Agnes to pull level before break. A penalty was awarded against Andrew, and home captain Reuben Chant stroked a confident penalty low and hard into the bottom left-hand corner.
Aggie had the momentum at the start of the second half, and Jayden Roberts pulled a shot just wide. But Penzance soon found their feet again. A link-up between Carveth and Ollie Butler – a half-time replacement for Easter – saw the latter serve up a very presentable chance for Carroll, but this time the striker spurned the opportunity.
Wilkinson went impressively close with a spectacular scissor-kick connection to a deep free-kick, then Kizzy Snowden fired over from a tight angle. But St Agnes had the clearest chance of the closing stages when Fin Nicholls counter-attacked down the right with Penzance pushed up in search of the winner. Instead of squaring to an unmarked team-mate, Nicholls went for glory, but hit only the base of Harvey Parsons’s far post, ensuring the points were shared.
“On reflection I think a draw was a fair result,” said Penzance Manager Daz Smith. “Neither team did quite enough to warrant the win in my opinion. We are more than happy with how the lads are progressing however, and I feel we are definitely moving in the right direction. I'm sure the results will come, it's just frustrating at the moment. It was also great to see Liam back in a Penzance shirt today, as we all know the quality and experience he brings to the group.”
