HAYLE 1, PENZANCE 0

ree

In the absence of manager Mark Vercesi, Penzance failed to recover from an early concession and concluded their pre-season with a disappointing defeat at Hayle on Friday evening writes James Wright.

The St Piran League hosts were, by contrast, playing their first warm-up game of the summer, and they took a fifth minute lead when the flight of a Kieran Rennard shot from the right-hand angle of the penalty area foxed Will Trenoweth, the ball finding its way into the top far corner. The Magpies hit back hard with Josh Magin having a free-kick saved before pulling a shot just wide. Charlie Young saw a powerful drive bravely blocked by a defender. James Butler then had Penzance’s best chance of the first half, but saw his point-blank range effort superbly saved by Caleb Hendy.

Rennard had an excellent opportunity to grab a second shortly after the turnaround, but pushed a lob just over the bar. Thereafter, the visitors dominated. From a Silas Sullivan cross from the left, Charlie Young fired over. Archie Reynolds pulled a shot just wide from a tight angle, them Brook Williams forced Hendy into a fine tip-over save.

Reynolds again went close with a dipping volley before the action concluded with Williams heading over from a Hayden Waters cross as Hayle held out for victory.
