HOLSWORTHY 2, PENZANCE 0

Goals right at start of each half sunk Penzance as they slipped to a disappointing defeat on the longest away trip of the season. The match was barely thirty seconds old when Nathan Slade fed a good pass down the right to Lewis Haxell. The young striker drew Mikey Flores before dinking a clever shot just inside the keeper’s far post.

In searing heat that necessitated drinks breaks in the middle of each half, Penzance slowly worked their way into the match. Set up by Rolandos Samnauskas, Jacob Trudgeon flashed a shot just wide whilst Charlie Willis saw an effort well saved by Ryan Chadwick, and Oscar Massey dipped a ferocious drive inches over the bar. At the other end, Flores did well to deny the lively Haxell a second, and also push aside an accurate free-kick by Gavin Carter.

Right and the end of the first period the visitors were desperately unlucky not to draw level when Tyler Tonkin crashed a first time shot against the cross-bar. Then, within two minutes of the turn-around, Holsworthy struck a killer blow with a second from Haxell – another impressive finish from wide on the right.

Connecting with a Sam Jago centre, the young striker almost completed his hat-trick before being replaced by Jacob Roseworthy on the hour. Penzance enjoyed a lot possession, but failed to make any impact in the final third. Injury-time had been entered before Chadwick was asked to make another save of drive of note, and he was again the equal of Tonkin’s shot as the Magpies drew their first blank in front of goal of the season.
