Penzance safely booked their place in the next round of the George Evely Cup on Saturday writes Henry Ramsey.
They lined up with Harvey Parsons in goal with a new back three of Ollie Page, Ashley Mead and Lewis Stephens. The wing-backs were Matt Robinson and Mark Sands, two midfielders of Lewis Hitchens and Kizzy Snowden, and Luke Carroll sat behind returning Jahmali Prowse and Victor Mullaly.
The Magpies flew out of the blocks with Mullaly, making his debut after signing from Penryn Athletic, unselfishly slotting the ball across the face of the goal for Prowse to smash home in the 4th minute. With the new partnership settling quickly, Mullaly had his favour returned and found himself on the score sheet with a confident finish from 18 yards to put the visiting side two goals to the good within just five minutes.
Lanner settled into the game, netting themselves in the 8th minute and 33rd minutes with two through balls that managed to squirm through the Penzance back line. However, just before half-time Prowse bagged his second of the game with a powerful strike with his preferred left foot, cutting in from the right hand side and beating the keeper at his near post.
In the 56th minute, Mullaly managed to secure himself a debut brace with a smartly followed up finish, cleaning up spillage from the keeper to put the Magpies two clear again. Lanner quickly replied just four minutes later with a wonderful strike from distance, caught on the volley and managing to beat Parsons. This then introduced the only Penzance sub, Callum Curran, who made an impact 15 minutes after his entrance, grabbing the assist for Jahmali’s hat-trick goal – buried low into the bottom right corner. Curran was then able to smash home a rebound from a Luke Carroll shot to secure a goal and assist for him off the bench, and complete the scoring.
“Myself and manager Daz Smith are impressed as the boys have showcased some real bounce-back-ability today, applying themselves after losing two games we know we should have won,” said Head Coach Henry Ramsay. “I’m glad they have gone and corrected those two losses with a ruthless attacking performance today. I’m over the moon for all the scorers, with Jahmali getting his first goals for us and sealing a hat-trick, and Victor with a debut brace – a big credit to Charlie Farley for getting him signed on in time! And for the impact Callum gave us off the bench with a goal and an assist - it gives me and Daz some serious selection issues moving forward!”
