LAUNCESTON 0, PENZANCE 2

In a match that followed the pattern of so many others of Penzance’s in recent weeks, patience paid off for the Magpies with Mark Vercesi’s side getting over the line with late goals having been frustrated for most of the encounter.
The visitors found themselves with numbers somewhat depleted. Ben Palmer’s switch to Helston Athletic on the eve of the fixture compounded for Vercesi the problem of already being without brothers Charlie and Sam Young, plus regular keeper Mikey Flores. The manager started himself at centre-back, and promoted loyal substitute goalie Will Trenoweth. The latter’s place on the bench was filled by Mullion’s Paul Williams. “Willo” – who debuted for the Magpies in 1988 - thus appeared on a Penzance team sheet for the first time in nine years, whilst his son Brook stepped into Charlie Young’s boots up top. And it was the sixteen year old who almost made the break-through after just four minutes, his clever lob plopping agonisingly against a post with Clarets keeper Liam Hill off his line.

It's not often a father and son appear on the same South West Peninsula team sheet.
With regular keeper Mikey Flores unavailable, Will Trenoweth starts.
Paul Williams, who made his Magpies debut in 1988, is sub keeper as son Brook makes his first start.
Curtis Smith had a free-kick deflected over as Penzance made a rip-snorting start. Then, set up by Jacob Trudgeon, Charlie Willis fired just over as he looked the repeat the wonder goal he scored at the same end of Pennygillam last season.Launceston had their first chance on the quarter hour, Trenoweth saving well from Lucas Preston. But the visitors were soon back on the front foot, Willis cushioning a pass to Kameron Collins who crashed his shot just wide from twenty yards out, then Williams having an effort bravely blocked by defender Jordan Stidson.
The Clarets were first to threaten after the break, Trenoweth again saving from Preston. But Penzance continued to look the more dangerous side. Ollie Butler fizzed a shot just over the bar before the deadlock was finally broken eleven minutes from time. A purposeful run into the box by Willis was curtailed by a clumsy push by Jude Farr, and Trudgeon confidently stroked home the resultant penalty. In the aftermath of the goal, Williams, who had represented Cornwall Under-16s the preceding evening, was replaced by Bernado Braga. And within three minutes the substitute had made a decisive impact, intelligently creating himself space to curl a delightful left-foot shot inside Hill’s far post to wrap up the win.
Opening scorer Jacob Trudgeon's reaction to today's 2-0 victory over Launceston.
