LISKEARD ATHLETIC 5, PENZANCE 0

Four goals down inside half an hour, Penzance endured an afternoon they will want to forget at Lux Park with the loss of Mikey Flores to a broken arm, and the late dismissal of teenage substitute Kai Baxter, compounding the misery.

With the Ralph twins returning to first call club Pendeen Rovers, two changes were made to the previous week’s side, Mark Vercesi resuming centre-back duties from Jack and Darryl Richards leading the line in place of Alex. The continued absence through injury of Liam Andrew and Cam McCabe proved a massive hindrance though, and the game was lost inside eight minutes. Jarrad Woods played in Dan Jennings and, although Flores saved well, James Rowe tapped home the rebound. Almost immediately, Jennings ran on to a long cross-field ball and his angled drive was diverted into his own net by Kam Collins. Then former Mousehole midfielder Max Gilbert made it three, finishing off a tidy move down the left with an accurate low shot.

Worse was to follow though when Flores rushed of his line to deny Ben Collins, but in snuffing out the left winger’s opening rebroke the arm he fractured at Camelford earlier in the season. The keeper battled on bravely until the severity of the injury became apparent, conceding a further goal to another fine strike from Jennings.

With Will Trenoweth back in between the sticks, Penzance had a glorious opportunity to pull one back just before break when Vercesi headed a Silas Sullivan free-kick down to Richards, but Sam Borthwick saved the striker’s close-range effort. On the restart, Liskeard bagged a fifth, Rowe nodding home after a Woods shot had come back off the close bar.

Some excellent saves by Trenoweth ensured the scoreline got no worse, and the visitors had several good chances of their own in the closing stages. Set up by Collins, Rolandos Samnauskas missed a glorious opportunity to score for a fifth consecutive game when he lobbed over. Trudgeon, Richards and sixteen year old substitute Baxter all also went close before proceedings finished on another sour note, Baxter being sent off for two late bookings. Definitely one for the Magpies to forget!
