PENZANCE 0, WENDRON UNITED 1

ree

Penzance were unable to convert any of the numerous chances they carved out as Mark Vercesi’s side put in an impressive attacking display. Wendron, on the other hand, mercilessly punished a rare bit of sloppiness at the back to head back up the A394 with all three points writes James Wright.

The Magpies made just one change to the side that had beaten Elburton Villa on its last outing, Ewan Trevains returning from injury in place of Jacob Trudgeon. Charlie Willis, who notched a wonderful late winner on that last outing, was desperately unlucky not to double his tally for the season as the home side made a storming start. The tigerish midfielder had three efforts on target repelled in the opening quarter – two by excellent saves from Riley Holen and another by a brave Callum Bertrand block.

Set up by the hard working Charlie Young, Lewis Caspall pulled a left foot shot wide after 26 minutes. Sam Young was just off target with an effort from distance as the home side continued to dominate. Wendron finished the half strongly, however. Max Roberts and Russell May both went close with headers from corners and, right on the stroke of the interval, they went ahead. Former Magpie Curtis Smith pounced on a loose clearance and squared to Brodie Kemp who made no mistake.

Holen sprawled low to his right to smother a Vercesi free-kick as Penzance hit back hard after the break. Arriving at pace at the far post, Charlie Young was millimetres away from connecting with a delicious Trevains cross from the right. Then Josh Turner muscled his way through the Wendron defence before being denied by yet another Holen save.

On a Wendron counter-attack ten minutes from time, Ryan Reeve looked odds-on to put the game to bed, but was denied by an excellent save by Harry Salmon. This meant Wendron had to withstand a late onslaught from their hosts. Holen pulled off his best save of the night at point blank range from Caspall. Seconds later Caspall had an even better chance, but his low drive fizzed past the far post and with it went Penzance’s hopes on a night of frustration for the Penlee Park faithful.
