PENZANCE 1, DOBWALLS 2

Penzance slipped to a first home league defeat of the season in a very hard fought match against Dobwalls.

The Magpies were depleted by a number of injuries, and fell behind just before the half-hour mark. Danger appeared to have been averted when referee Robert Fleetham waved play on after Kaycee Ogwu went down theatrically under a challenge from Archie Reynolds. But, before the home side could properly clear their lines, Frazer Cadman was dispossessed by Charlie Castlehouse who tucked a low shot past Mikey Flores.

The concession was extremely harsh on the Magpies who had largely dominated the opening stages, being denied by the crossbar from an cutely hit Tyler Tonkin free-kick after Charlie Willis had been chopped down by Joe Cook. They were to strike the woodwork twice more – through Rolandos Samnauskas and Michael Fitchett - before the break and, thoroughly undeservedly, turned around two down. Right on the stroke of the interval former St Blazey midfielder Gino Garside flipped over a quite delightful cross with the outside of his right boot that visiting captain Ian Thomas nodded home to put his side in a commanding position.

To their credit, Penzance licked their very sore wounds and came out for the second half with a positive mentality. After two minutes, Silas Sullivan glanced a header just wide from a Cadman corner. The versatile player, pushed into a more attacking position by Oscar Massey’s departure to Barnstaple Town, was not to be denied and got a deserved goal when he tickled a Reynolds cross over the line eight minutes later to put the Magpies back in the contest.

Unfortunately Penzance were unable to build momentum from the goal. Even a ten minute numerical advantage afforded by the sin-binning of Garside was not sufficient to pull them back to parity. Fitchett finally found the net in the closing stages, but was flagged offside. The forward’s protestation against the decision saw him sin-binned, the final frustration of a disappointing afternoon for the home club.
