PENZANCE 2, CALLINGTON TOWN 0

Penzance inflicted on Callington Town only a second league defeat of the season, and extended their own winning run to seven games with a thoroughly competent 2-0 win at Penlee Park. They were however indebted to Mikey Flores who scooped the Man of the Match award, his string of fine saves going a long way to helping the Magpies record a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

The goalkeeper’s heroics began in the third minute when he tipped a looping Lee Robinson header on to the bar. The home side had early chances too, Curtis Smith curling a free-kick over before picking out Jacob Trudgeon with a fine cross, but the latter’s header was off target.

Flores denied Robinson again before Penzance made the break-through just before the half-hour mark, Smith ghosting in front of his marker to guide home a tantalising deep cross from Archie Reynolds. Callington sought to hit back immediately, and Flores acrobatically saved from Kieran Ryall before palming a Robinson shot against his left-hand post.

The visitors continued the onslaught after the break. Frazer Ferris had a shot deflected wide before Robinson was again frustrated by another eye-catching Flores save. Kieran Prescott was also unable to find a way past the inspired gloveman, his powerful drive being cleanly pouched.

With twenty minutes to go, the Magpies got the all-important second goal, vice-captain Silas Sullivan delivering a fine cross from the left from which Charlie Willis emphatically fired home his fourth goal of the season to seal the points.

The win consolidated for Penzance third place in the table, just behind Newquay and Wendron. Reflecting on the lofty position, manager Mark Vercesi said: “With a few different results we might have been higher, but we have played more than others. But at least we are keeping close to the teams at the top and waiting for people to slip up. It is going to be a tight season this.”
