PENZANCE RESERVES 1, CAMBORNE SCHOOL OF MINES 0

ree

Penzance moved to the top of the Division One West table, albeit having played a game more than morning leaders Dropship, by virtue of hard-earned single goal success over Camborne School of Mines on a wet evening at Penlee Park writes James Wright.

The Magpies threatened first with Luke Carroll, eager to add to a remarkable tally of eight goals in three games, haring clear down the right before pulling his shot just beyond the far post. The visitors then enjoyed a string of good chances, the best of which was snuffed out when Harvey Parsons saved well from Jacob Phillips.

An easy-on-the-eye Penzance passing move just before the half hour mark culminated with Carroll laying the ball into the path of full-back Connor Glanville who tested keeper Henry Betts with a stinging drive. The goal followed shortly afterwards. A deep free-kick by Kizzy Snowden was cleared only as far as Fin Sharp who turned the ball back into the danger area where Wade Brown nodded home his second goal in as many games.

Phillips squandered two great chances to haul Camborne School of Mines back to parity before the interval. They continued to knock at the door after the turnaround in an open, end to end encounter. Penzance too had their chances with substitute Charlie Palmer coming closest, with a header from a Snowden corner. But the first half goal in the end sufficed to take the Magpies to the top of the tree.

“It was another outstanding effort from all players involved this evening,” purred head coach Henry Ramsay. “They executed the game plan really well and stuck to their guns. Wade capitalising with a header late into the first half, but then the determination and grit from the boys to go and fight for those three points in the second half was colossal, really setting down some superb standards to follow.”
