Penzance welcomed local neighbours St Buryan on Tuesday in what turned out to be an exciting clash for the final pre-season friendly ahead of the season opener on Saturday writes Henry Ramsay.
The hosts took the lead just under half way through the first half, seeing returning prolific goal scorer Luke Carroll score his first of two for the evening. This was followed up by an immediate reaction by the new-look St Buryan. An acrobatic finish from Jack Parker, shortly followed by a back post tap-in by Jamie Nankervis, saw the visitors lead at the break.
The Reserves came out the blocks for the second half flying, seeking a reaction immediately, which was found with Hayden Waters smashing home a close finish to tie the game up once again. Pressure mounted on St Buryan from this with Kizzy Snowden, Ashley Mead and substitute winger Fin Harry all going close. However a half chance opportunity from former St Just striker Ashley Ellis lead to him being brought down in the area, resulting in a penalty which was converted by Jake Maddern. This didn’t deter the boys in black and white as, yet again, an equaliser was found by none other than Luke Carroll, seeing what turned out to be an exciting match finish 3-3.
“There are positives to take again. Obviously it would have been nice to end pre-season with a win under the belt, but the reaction from the boys in the second half was what is important. Lots to take away and tweak in training ahead of Saturday’s league opener” says head coach Henry Ramsay.
The reserves open their Division One West campaign on Saturday against Porthleven Reserves.
