Perranwell Reserves 1, Penzance Reserves 2

Penzance’s young team travelled to Perranwell for a league fixture last Saturday and, with no referee available, the home club’s manager stepped in.

Dylan Walter, recently signed from Mousehole, made his debut on the right wing whilst Kylo Mayes, making just his second appearance at adult level, started up front with the experienced Joel Steele.

Penzance flew out of the blocks enjoying the vast majority of possession whilst hitting the bar and forcing the home keeper to make multiple saves. It was therefore against the run of play that Perranwell centre forward Simon James chased down a lobbed pass and cheekily lobbed Adrian Murley to put his side ahead.

The Magpies continued to create the better chances, but just lacked a finish. Mayes was proving to be a real menace, pressing high, whilst Sam Payne and Joshua Reeves bossed the central areas. The deserved equaliser finally arrived early in the second when a floated cross from Walter found Steele who was able to guide the ball into the far corner with a glancing header.

Perranwell hit back forcing Murley into two good saves. However, with space beginning to open up, Penzance’s fitness began to shine through with their tempo and one touch passing creating chances. Finally, after a corner and a goal mouth scramble, the visitors got their reward for the hard work as Jake Heale poked home the winner from close range.

Mayes and Heale were the recipients of a double Man of the Match award for two top performances today, but everyone put in a good a shift.

Well done lads!!
