PORTHLEVEN 2, PENZANCE 1

A heavily deflected shot ten minutes from time condemned Penzance to defeat in their sixth, and final, pre-season friendly at a drenched Gala Parc.

The visitors might have taken an early when Jacob Trudgeon played in Oscar Massey, but the new signing’s shot passed just over. The match turned when the already depleted Magpies lost left-back Alfie Turner to a hamstring tweak after just fifteen minutes. Port gradually gained the upper hand. Kegan McPhilbin and James Whitworth both went close, and it was no surprise when the home side took the lead just before the break. Sam Leslie delivered a sweet cross from the right to which Connor Webb applied a skilful, cushioned volley that Mikey Flores was just unable to claw out.

The second half was a different story with Penzance almost entirely dominant. They were level within seconds, Trudgeon drilling a low shot just inside the near post. With the torrential rain barely abating and puddles starting to form on the pitch, the Magpies attacked with purpose. Dylan Walter was denied by a good save after connecting with a Kam Collins centre, and Massey flashed a vicious free-kick just wide.

Missed chances proved costly, as they usually do. Ten minutes from time Dexter Bainbridge blasted a speculative shot goalwards. The ball flicked his team-mate Jack Hannaford and the deflection, whether intentional or not, left Will Trenoweth, a now customary half-time replacement for Flores, wrong-footed. The ball trickled agonisingly over the line to hand the Fishermen a noteworthy win over a higher ranked opponents.
