RESERVES REVIEW

Joint Manager Darren Smith takes a look at how the summer has shaped up for the Reserve team...

Pre-season for Penzance Reserves has been a bit of a mixed bag really, but with lots of positives. We kicked off with an away trip against higher league opposition, Helston Development Seconds, where we were held to an entertaining nil nil draw.

Second up was our very own Penzance under-18s. With part of our Reserve team managing the under18s , we were able to rotate our squad and give some fringe players a run-out. Fortunately we had a little too much for the under-18s as we came away with a 5-2 win.

Thirdly, we entertained Lizard Argyle in a first Penlee Park run-out. Two goals from Tyler Smith and another from Archie Ward delivered a 3-1 win.

We then ventured to Borlase Park where higher league Pendeen Rovers first team were our opponents. Despite our best efforts and several penalty shouts waved away, we suffered our first loss. 5-2 was the scoreline but, with three 16 and 17 year-olds in the team, we pushed Pendeen hard.

Finally, last Saturday we welcomed Perranporth to Penlee Park for the Alfie Beard Memorial Match. In a very emotional game where we marked the one year anniversary of the tragic loss of Alfie, our lads did us proud. A 5-2 win was the result as we battled well against a physical Perranporth team.

Alfie’s younger brother Corey skippered the side and played in central midfield, doing his brother proud! Tyler Smith, one of Alfie's best friends, grabbed himself a hat-trick with under-18 starlet Freddie Neaum nabbing the other two.

An auction proceeded the game where we raised an incredible £987.00 for RNLI Lizard where Alfie's uncle is a crew member. We would like to thank everyone for their efforts to make the day a success in memory of Alfie, and a framed shirt and plaque has now taken permanent residence at the clubhouse.
