With most of the team playing their first match at the higher age group, Penzance’s Under-18s experienced a difficult opening to their new campaign, succumbing to an excellent St Blazey side who were ruthless in front of goal in the Rathbone Cup on Monday night.
The young Magpies made a very strong start to the match looking the more positive side in the opening exchanges. But, with their first attack, Blazey took a 9th minute lead, striker Ashton Cantell confidently firing home when he found himself one-on-one with keeper Harry Conti.
Jahmali Prowse, Fin Sharp and Sid Wilson all went close for Penzance, but they fell further behind in the 19th minute to a Tomas Amado goal. This triggered a purple patch for Blazey who pulled clear with an excellent strikes from Harry Blows and Amado again. With a fine finish from the edge of the box, Logan Curnow gave the Magpies hope, but this was quickly extinguished on the stroke of half-time, Thomas Hensman firing into the roof of the net from close range after clever work down the left by Blows.
Conti saved well from Cantell at the start of the second half, but Hensman extended the lead on the hour with a fine left-foot finish, cutting in from the right. Cantell bagged his second of the night before Blazey scored their best goal in the 79th minute, Hensman crossing for Amado to smash the ball home on the run.
Penzance’s difficult night concluded with Sharp being dismissed for a second bookable offence, and Seth McNab rounding Conti to roll in the ninth. They have an early opportunity to bounce back when they entertain Dropship this Sunday at Penlee Park (2pm kick-off) in their opening League fixture of the season.
