A devastating first half display, scoring four unanswered goals, paved the way for the Magpies to fly into the last sixteen of the Walter C Parson Cup with a statement victory at Premier East Division side Torrington.
For the first time this season the Magpies were able to name summer signing Chris Wormington, injured in pre-season. The former Mullion captain had to make his debut at left-back, in place of unavailable Silas Sullivan, but was nonetheless almost on the score-sheet as early as the third minute, getting on the end of a Charlie Willis free-kick but not quite able to keep his header on target.
The rampant visitors were not to be denied long, however, Lewis Caspall despatching a thunderous left-footer to which keeper Jake Greening got a touch, but could not significantly divert, as it arrowed its way into the top corner of the net. Within ten minutes, the lead had been doubled, Charlie Young sliding a delicious pass into the path of Willis who drew Greening before slotting the ball home with unflappable confidence.
Teenage midfielder Curtis Smith was next on the scoresheet, his delightfully curled left-foot free-kick finding its way into the net via the cross-bar. Tyler Tonkin has a shot saved by Greening before Penzance effectively killed the game in first-half injury time, Charlie Young tucking a penalty low to Greening’s right.
The second-half was always likely to be a case of “after the Lord Mayor’s show” for the visitors, and so it proved. Charlie Young’s close-range finish fifteen minutes from time, doubling his personal tallies for both the day and the season, was the only addition to the score. The striker was denied a hat-trick, and his younger brother Sam a first goal for Penzance, by a couple of brave blocks by the Torrington defence in the closing moments.
Penzance’s reward for this impressive victory is another tie against Devon opposition, though this time at Penlee Park. The Magpies will entertain Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police on Saturday in November 30th seeking a place in the last eight.
