WADEBRIDGE TOWN 1, PENZANCE 3

ree

Penzance recovered from a bad start, squandering a penalty and falling a goal behind inside the first six minutes, to record an impressive victory at Bodieve Park and edge up to seventh in the table. With his second and third goals in just two matches, George Molcher was the man of the moment, moving to the top of the Magpies scoring chart for the season writes James Wright.

A hand-ball gave Charlie Young the early spot kick opportunity. With a fine save low to his right, Rob Rosevear denied the Penzance forward giving Wadebridge the momentum to snatch the lead just two minutes later. Adam Goulty’s stinging shot from wide on the left was parried by Will Trenoweth, but only into the path of Liam Higgins who made no mistake.

The Bridgers had chances to give themselves daylight. Kyle Marks skewed an effort off target when in on goal, then Trenoweth saved well from Higgins. Penzance punished these misses by levelling after twenty minutes. A whipped cross from the left by Silas Sullivan located Charlie Young. The striker’s far post header was clawed out by Rosevear, but only to the feet of Molcher who stabbed home his first.

A scintillating burst down the right by Lewis Caspall was the catalyst for Penzance’s second, six minutes later. Sliding in, Charlie Young was millimetres away from connecting with the midfielder’s drilled centre which then came back off the base of the far post into the path of Molcher who converted with glee.

Archie Reynolds, on his 99th consecutive Peninsula League start, and Charlie Young both came close to extending the lead after the turnaround. However, the latter’s sin-binning fifteen minutes from time gave Wadebridge renewed energy and they laid siege to the Penzance goal for the final quarter hour of regulation time. However, a Marks shot that was deflected inches over was the closest the home side came to levelling.

With numerical parity restored and Wadebridge still pushed up in search of the equaliser, space opened for Penzance as the clock ticked past the ninety minutes. On a first counter attack, substitute Jacob Trudgeon released Charlie Willis only for the midfielder to pull his shot just beyond Rosevear’s far post. But on the second, Caspall, cutting in from the right flank, made no mistake, securing the win with a composed finish.
