CAMELFORD 6, PENZANCE 1

For the second consecutive Saturday the Magpies made a long trip up the A39 into North Cornwall. From the match at Bude seven days earlier, the management made two changes replacing Will Trenoweth in goal with Mikey Flores and drafting Nathaniel West into the starting eleven at the expense of Rolandos Samnauskas, but the result was the same – the concession of six goals in a heavy defeat.

West, on his first start, had Penzance’s best chance of the afternoon very early on when he tenaciously dispossessed a defender, but could not find a finish to match when in on goal. By this time the Camels had already spurned a string of chances and it was fully deserved that they took the lead just before the half hour. With Penzance still adjusting having replaced booked Jordan Daniell with Kam Collins thirty seconds earlier, Ryan Downing was allowed to run through unchallenged to fire home.

The visitors had just one more chance of note before the break, Darryl Richards firing into the side netting after running on to a slide rule pass from Kizzy Snowden, and turned around two down due to the wicked deflection of a Dan O’Hara shot leaving Flores helpless.

Injuries to West and Tyler Tonkin early in the second half hampered Penzance’s prospects of getting back into the game, and Tyler Cheshire benefited from good work by the excellent Downing to fire Camelford three up with twenty minutes to go. Downing then got his second – a fine solo effort, cutting in from the left before drilling the ball into the far corner of the net. Charlie Hambly added a fifth – a tidy, low right foot shot from 18 yards out twelve minutes from time.

Kevin Lawrence’s earlier introduction for injured captain Tonkin had injected a spark of creativity into Penzance’s play, and the former manager was pivotal in the neat move that resulted in a consolation goal three minutes from time. Lawrence linked up with Richards and Samnasuskas to tee up Jacob Trudgeon to crash the ball home, but there was still time for Cheshire to snatch a sixth for the dominant Camels deep into added time to conclude the scoring.
