Penzance brushed off a number of notable absences to record a sixth straight victory. Welcoming back captain Tyler Tonkin for a first appearance since his injury in pre-season also helped the Magpies chalk up a fourth consecutive clean sheet as they moved into the top three.
The Clarets threatened first, captain Dylan Rangecroft stretching Harry Salmon to smart save low to his right in just the third minute. Thereafter, the Penzance gloveman was barely troubled as his side bossed proceedings in front of him. They took to lead when Ewan Trevains soared to head home a Hayden Waters cross. “It is a Premier League cross – an unbelievable cross,” purred manager Mark Vercesi. “And Ewan’s timing of his run into the box is perfect, and it is a great header. It is not something Ewan is accustomed to doing, scoring with his head, but he’s just shown today another string to his bow.”
Cutting in on to his favoured left foot, Lewis Caspall rifled home a second, then doubled his account with a splendid shot, arrowed into the top right corner, from a short Trevains pass. “Lewis was a menace all day and did exactly what we were asking him to do,” noted the manager. “We’ve been asking Lewis to keep hitting the target - he should be scoring more goals. I can’t think of enough superlatives to describe Lewis at the moment. He is such a top player for us, and today he deserved those two goals.”
From a pinpoint Archie Reynolds cross six minutes after the interval, Charlie Willis headed the first of a barrage that was to usurp Caspall’s first half brace. A second header was netted barely sixty seconds later. Then, from a Waters centre, the midfielder completed a ten minute hat-trick - his first Magpies treble. “Charlie today was fantastic,” praised Vercesi. “His timing of his runs into the box was fantastic – two great headers and another great finish.”
Caspall had a presentable chance to compete a treble of his own when Howie Evans could only block a Ben Palmer drive into his path in injury-time. But the forward was unluckily denied by the cross-bar. There was, however, still time for the Magpies to notch a seventh. Substitute Ollie Butler drilled home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area to conclude another very satisfactory day at the office for Vercesi’s men.
