Away to an in-form, higher level team, Penzance needed to be at full strength and deliver a flawless performance to get over the first hurdle in the Cornwall Senior Cup. Neither box was ticked, and so Mark Vercesi’s men relinquished their grip on the County’s premier prize that they claimed for the first time in 45 years last season.

Unavailable to the Gaffer – himself managing an niggle - were big-hitters Charlie Willis, Lewis Caspall, Josh Turner, Hayden Waters and Josh Otto. Not to mention long-term injury victims Mark Richards and Silas Sullivan. Nonetheless, the visitors made a very promising start with Jacob Trudgeon – the two-goal hero of last May’s final – testing Shaun Semmens with a stinging drive in the opening exchanges.

But, in the 10th minute, things started to go awry. Though Harry Salmon did well to parry a Tim Nixon shot, a foul was committed as the loose ball was contested, and Jack Bray-Evans did the business from the penalty spot. Almost immediately, Matt Searle threaded an accurate low shot just inside Salmon’s far post, and the Magpies were two down.

James Butler’s vicious in-swinging deliveries on a gusty Mount Wise night caused the Newquay defence some strife, offering the Magpies renewed hope. George Molcher stretched Semmens to another great save – low to his right from a well-struck 20-yarder. But critically, the Peppermints eased further ahead shortly before the break. The gale perhaps caused Salmon to misread the flight of a Nixon free-kick from way out on the left, the ball finding its way over the line to all but secure Newquay’s passage.

Kizzy Snowden – who in 2022 scored a memorable winner at Mount Wise to end a 25 game losing run – made a first appearance since January 2024 as a replacement for James Butler. But the Reserve team stalwart, like fellow-subs Jahmali Prowse and Wade Brown, was unable to prise open a water-tight home defence as rain bucketed down. With ten minutes to go a speculative effort from wide of the right by Newquay sub Tom Shepherd somehow squirmed inside Salmon’s near post to make it 4-0. Only smart saves from Connor Paine and Bray-Evans – expertly set up by Louis Price in injury-time – prevented further damage.

“It was a hard one to take that,” conceded Vercesi. “Four individual errors were punished by some clinical opposition players. We competed well for large parts of that game, and we will look at those positives more than the scoreline.”
