Penzance capitalised from having an almost a full squad from which to choose for the first time this season by recording a first home win since the same opponents visited on the equivalent weekend last season.
With goalkeeper Mikey Flores the only notable absentee, the Magpies made a positive start. Set up by Rolandos Samnauskas, Darryl Richards forced an early save from Paul Thompson, whilst Jordan Daniell curled an impressive shot around the post from twenty yards out.
The visitors enjoyed a purple patch midway through the first half. Ian Thomas struck a post, Ben Walters forced a fine save from Will Trenoweth, then Matt Edwards sent a shot just over. So it was perhaps against the run of play that Penzance took the lead just before the half hour mark, Jacob Trudgeon firing home a centre from Richards.
With their tails up, the home side finished the half strongly. Thompson did brilliantly to keep out a fierce Samnauskas volley, but was deceived by the flight of a Trudgeon cross three minutes before the break, the ball finding its way into his net from wide on the right.
A brilliant tip-over save by Trenoweth from a Lewis Phillips free-kick early in the second half kept Penzance firmly in the driving seat, and victory was all but ensured by a third goal just after the hour mark. Silas Sullivan scooped a delightful through ball into the path of Richards who in turn skilfully beat onrushing Callington keeper Thompson.
Whilst this concluded the scoring, there was still plenty of action for the large crowd to enjoy in the sun with both teams hitting the woodwork. Walters headed against Trenoweth’s bar whilst, at the other end, Daniell struck the goal frame when arriving late to meet a Cam McCabe corner. But, most frustratingly, Trudgeon hit Thompson’s right hand post with a penalty that would have given him his hat-trick – the only small disappointment on an otherwise thoroughly satisfactory afternoon.
